Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Depressive Symptoms of the Jeju 4.3 Incident Victims

Abstract

|
|
Objectives : The casualties of the Jeju 4.3 incident reached 30,000 people and in consideration of that suffered generation of the Jeju 4.3 incident was older generation who are vulnerable to mental health, they are needed to research on their mental health.
Methods : One hundred ten surviving victims and 1,011 family members of victims were asked to complete self-report questionnaires on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and depression. PTSD symptom was assessed using the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D).
Results : PTSD symptoms were found in 83.7% of the participants. Among those who have PTSD symptoms, moderate risk is the commonest (41.0%, n=460), followed by mild risk (28.8%, n=323) then severe risk (13.8%, n=155). PTSD symptoms were associated with depression.
Conclusion : The prevalence of PTSD symptoms and depression of Jeju 4 .3 surviving victims and family members of victims are high. Therefore, the management plans for depression is required with the underlying PTSD treatment.
